Mods, please modify or delete as apropriate. i will try and keep the posts to the minimum.
Over the next few weeks, I'll put together a thread on the fitment of a 5.9 6 cylinder Cummins Diesel engine and ZF gearbox into my 101. Why so big? A 101 is a light truck, so IMO it needs a truck engine. Having sold an overweight Td5 Defender 130, owning another 101 was the only option. I'd fitted a 5.7 Nissan/UD 6 cyl diesel into my last 101 in the UK and it transformed it, so deemed a diesel 101 would be the go for touring within Australia. There are those that will cringe and say a 101 should be V8... My pocket says the opposite!
Right. First off.. This can't be done in a weekend, involves a lot of engineering and should not be undertaken if you are not confident in welding/engineering. You will need:- Donor engine and ZF 5-42 gearbox, 1.222:1 Discovery Transfer Box (rebuilt, with Ashcroft One Piece Center Diff Cross Shaft, Increased Capacity sump for LT230, 110/130 Salisbury 3.54:1 R & P (inc diff centers as have different ofset to the 101 and Series centers), 109/110 rear prop to cut down for new front prop, RR Classic prop to modify for new rear prop, Ebay Intercooler (if you want to go this far), 3" exhaust tube and assortment of bends, assortment of 25mm, 12mm, 6mm and 3mm plate steel.
You will also need to manufacture or have manufactured a conversion plate to allow the ZF5-42 gearbox to fit the LT230 transfer case. There are several ways of doing this, and I'll touch on those later.
Pictured is my donor engine and gearbox. Sorry about earlier pics.. Soon realised Ipad camera is not a patch on IPhone camera.
